The Narrative

Navigating the shadow of the educational system

In this powerful instalment of the ESTRANGED series, ARJAN SPANNENBURG investigates the systemic failures that force queer youth to choose between their mental health and their education. Through the portrait of DAMIAN, the artist visualises the "piercing looks and negative whispering" that transformed the school environment into a site of trauma. SPANNENBURG utilises the skeletal, aggressive geometry of bare winter branches to symbolise the sharp verbal attacks and physical intimidation DAMIAN faced for being "too feminine." The artwork captures the profound isolation of a young man who had to "grasp the chance to quit with both hands" just to survive, even at the cost of his academic standing.

Reimagining achievement beyond the projected outcome

Die motivering van SPANNENBURG vir hierdie stuk is om die sosiale stigma uit te daag wat geheg word aan diegene sonder formele kwalifikasies—die sogenaamde "afval van die samelewing."
