ESTRANGED - SIEBE

"A profound statement of self-autonomy, capturing the instant of complete separation from the external need for approval."

The Narrative

Beyond the threshold of external approval

In this definitive instalment of the ESTRANGED series, ARJAN SPANNENBURG investigates the profound shift from seeking acceptance to embodying self-worth. Through the portrait of SIEBE, the artist visualises a state of complete emotional independence. SPANNENBURG utilises the dense, invasive texture of ivy to represent the persistent social pressures that attempt to entwine and define the queer body. The artwork captures the subject as he emerges through the foliage, not in a state of hiding, but in a state of controlled visibility. It is a visual manifesto for the individual who has realised that their value is inherent and non-negotiable, regardless of the society that surrounds them.

The sanctuary of internal certainty

SPANNENBURG’S objective with this piece is to document the final stage of the "estrangement" journey: the point where the subject is no longer estranged from themselves, but intentionally detached from the judgments of others. By placing SIEBE amidst the dark, waxy leaves of the ivy, the artist mirrors the resilience required to maintain one's core identity in a world that demands conformity. As SIEBE poignantly declares: not a shred of my self-worth depends on your acceptance of me. This work serves as an institutional testament to the power of the self-contained psyche. For the curator and collector, this photograph offers a rare glimpse into the quiet, unshakable strength of a person who has reclaimed their own narrative.

Visual Analysis

A vertical black and white photograph featuring a shirtless young man positioned behind and within a dense wall of ivy leaves. The subject's face is partially obscured by the large, dark leaves, with only his nose, mouth, and parts of his cheeks visible. His torso is illuminated by a soft, central light that emphasizes the smooth texture of his skin against the complex, shadowed patterns of the foliage. His hands are visible on either side, gently gripping the vertical vines as if parting a curtain. The composition is rich with organic detail, creating a high-contrast environment where the human form and the botanical texture are deeply integrated.
