ESTRANGED - DAMIAN

"A raw, cinematic exploration of the high cost of safety, capturing the intersection of educational displacement and the resilient pursuit of dignity without a diploma."

The Narrative

Navigating the shadow of the educational system

In this powerful instalment of the ESTRANGED series, ARJAN SPANNENBURG investigates the systemic failures that force queer youth to choose between their mental health and their education. Through the portrait of DAMIAN, the artist visualises the "piercing looks and negative whispering" that transformed the school environment into a site of trauma. SPANNENBURG utilises the skeletal, aggressive geometry of bare winter branches to symbolise the sharp verbal attacks and physical intimidation DAMIAN faced for being "too feminine." The artwork captures the profound isolation of a young man who had to "grasp the chance to quit with both hands" just to survive, even at the cost of his academic standing.

Redefining success beyond the paper promise

SPANNENBURG’S motivation for this piece is to challenge the societal stigma attached to those without formal qualifications—the so-called "drain of society." By placing DAMIAN within a dense, chaotic thicket, the artist mirrors the subject's internal struggle with shame and the constant need to justify his non-traditional path. As DAMIAN reflects on the societal pressure to possess a diploma: Despite this being the right choice, the question remains whether this so-called promise has now disappeared for me. At the end of the day, everyone wants to be happy. This work serves as an institutional critique of a society that measures human worth through certificates rather than character and resilience. For the collector, this piece offers a hauntingly beautiful narrative on the courage it takes to find happiness in the workforce while carrying the invisible weight of a disrupted youth.

Visual Analysis
