The Narrative

Navigating the eclipse of the self

In this ethereal chapter of the ESTRANGED series, ARJAN SPANNENBURG examines the psychological impact of isolation as a catalyst for profound internal revelation. Through the portrait of BRANDON, the artist visualises the emergence of an alter-ego or a deeper facet of the soul: LUNAURA. SPANNENBURG utilises the fruit-bearing branches of an apple tree to symbolise the ripening of a suppressed identity. The artwork captures the transition from a period of "estrangement from the self" during the stillness of the pandemic to the courageous act of inviting the world to witness a hidden, moon-charged energy. It is a study of the fragile boundary between the public face and the private aura.

Embracing the lunar landscape of identity

SPANNENBURG’S objective with this piece is to validate the exploration of gender fluidity and the spiritual dimensions of the self as a natural, biological process. By placing BRANDON within the intricate, shadowed canopy of the orchard, the artist mirrors the subject's tentative steps into the world of makeup and self-expression. As BRANDON reflects on the birth of this new understanding: LUNAURA for me is not a split personality, it is more a part of me. I have therefore chosen to seek out and give space to this side of me more. This work serves as an institutional testament to the importance of "auric" space—the energy we project and protect.
