The sharp thorns of hyper-fixation

In this striking addition to the ESTRANGED series, ARJAN SPANNENBURG navigates the psychological landscape of body dysmorphia and the relentless pursuit of youth. The portrait of RICARDO captures a moment of deep introspection, where the natural transition into manhood is met not with celebration, but with a panic reaction that races through the body. SPANNENBURG uses the jagged, sharp leaves of the holly bush to mirror the internal discomfort RICARDO feels toward his own changing features. The artist masterfully visualises the "flawless mirror" that reflects an image at odds with the subject's internal desire, highlighting the friction between biological reality and the curated expectations of a community.
