Beyond the threshold of external approval

In this definitive instalment of the ESTRANGED series, ARJAN SPANNENBURG investigates the profound shift from seeking acceptance to embodying self-worth. Through the portrait of SIEBE, the artist visualises a state of complete emotional independence. SPANNENBURG utilises the dense, invasive texture of ivy to represent the persistent social pressures that attempt to entwine and define the queer body. The artwork captures the subject as he emerges through the foliage, not in a state of hiding, but in a state of controlled visibility. It is a visual manifesto for the individual who has realised that their value is inherent and non-negotiable, regardless of the society that surrounds them.

The sanctuary of internal certainty

SPANNENBURG se doel met hierdie stuk is om die laaste stadium van die "vervreemding"-reis te dokumenteer: die punt waar die onderwerp nie meer van hulleself vervreemd is nie, maar doelbewus losgemaak is van die oordele van ander.
