ESTRANGED - RICARDO

"A piercing examination of the ephemeral nature of youth and the visceral anxiety of aging within a subculture that venerates the adolescent aesthetic."

The Narrative

The sharp thorns of hyper-fixation

In this striking addition to the ESTRANGED series, ARJAN SPANNENBURG navigates the psychological landscape of body dysmorphia and the relentless pursuit of youth. The portrait of RICARDO captures a moment of deep introspection, where the natural transition into manhood is met not with celebration, but with a panic reaction that races through the body. SPANNENBURG uses the jagged, sharp leaves of the holly bush to mirror the internal discomfort RICARDO feels toward his own changing features. The artist masterfully visualizes the "flawless mirror" that reflects an image at odds with the subject's internal desire, highlighting the friction between biological reality and the curated expectations of a community.

Confronting the stigma of the aging body

SPANNENBURG’S motivation for this work is to expose the heavy toll of the beauty standards prevalent within the gay community, where age is often treated as a loss of social currency. By placing RICARDO among the prickly foliage, the artist creates a metaphor for the "privilege" of aging that feels more like a threat. As RICARDO candidly observes: I think the gay community is very concerned with appearance and age and if you fall outside the norm then you get less done. No more free drinks, no attention, and yet somewhere you want to continue to belong. This piece transcends personal anxiety to become an institutional critique of superficiality and the desperate attempts to hold onto youth like sand slipping through fingers. For the collector, this work offers a hauntingly beautiful look at the vulnerability of the male ego in the face of time.

Visual Analysis

A vertical black and white photograph depicting a shirtless young man surrounded by the dense, sharp-edged leaves of a holly plant. The subject is shown from the waist up, his body angled slightly away while his face is partially obscured by a branch of leaves, casting shadows across his features. His arms are raised, with his hands gently interacting with the branches above and in front of him. The lighting is focused, creating bright highlights on his shoulders and chest, contrasting sharply with the dark, shadowed recesses of the background. The textures of the prickly leaves against his smooth skin emphasize a sense of tactile tension and organic entanglement.
