ESTRANGED - TOOTSI

"A magnificent intersection of resistance and theatricality, capturing the blossoming of identity through the defiant, celebratory language of drag."

The Narrative

Challenging the binary through the lens of performance

In this vibrant instalment of the ESTRANGED series, ARJAN SPANNENBURG explores the concept of identity as a deliberate, creative act. Through the portrait of TOOTSI, the artist investigates how the traditions of drag serve as both a shield and a bridge to authentic selfhood. SPANNENBURG uses the broad, heart-shaped leaves of the lilac tree to create a lush, organic proscenium for the subject's meticulously crafted appearance. The artwork captures the specific moment where societal "wrongness" is transformed into personal power. It is a study of the courage required to follow a passion that exists outside the rigid borders of traditional masculinity, turning the disapproval of the outside world into a catalyst for artistic attraction.

Die Erbe der Widerstandsfähigkeit als kreative Kraft

SPANNENBURG’S motivation for this work is to celebrate the foundational role of family acceptance in the cultivation of queer brilliance. By placing TOOTSI amidst the dense foliage, the artist highlights the subject's ability to remain central and visible even when surrounded by the shadows of external judgment. As TOOTSI reflects on the roots of their confidence: I was lucky enough to grow up with an accepting family who taught me a lot: I was taught from a young age that I should not give a damn about the opinion of others. This piece serves as an institutional record of drag not just as entertainment, but as a vital survival strategy and a form of high-art protest. For the collector, this work offers a powerful narrative on the beauty of uninhibited self-expression and the importance of nurturing every child's unique passion.

Visual Analysis

A vertical black and white photograph featuring a person in drag, wearing a light-coloured wig with short bangs and a textured, ruffled blazer. The subject is positioned within a dense thicket of broad, heart-shaped leaves that frame the upper and lower portions of the composition. They are seen from the waist up, their face adorned with dramatic, professional makeup, looking slightly away from the camera with a confident and poised expression. One hand is visible, resting among the leaves in the middle foreground, displaying manicured nails. The lighting is balanced, illuminating the subject's face and the ruffles of the jacket, while the deep shadows of the foliage create a sense of depth and mystery.
