The Narrative

Exploring the complex pathways of self-discovery

In this contemplative instalment of the ESTRANGED series, ARJAN SPANNENBURG investigates the psychological friction between the desire for absolute certainty and the reality of the fluid self. Through the portrait of FRANCISCO, the artist visualises the quiet labour of introspection. SPANNENBURG utilises the distinctive, palm-like leaves of the chestnut tree to symbolise the protective but permeable layers of identity. The artwork captures the subject in a state of closed-eyed vulnerability, suggesting that the "truth" we seek is not found in the external gaze, but in the internal shadows where our most profound questions reside.
