"A visual testament to the resilience of the self against the abrasive currents of public scrutiny, capturing the tension between biological identity and societal friction."
The Narrative
The burden of the hyper-visible body
In this compelling instalment of the ESTRANGED series, ARJAN SPANNENBURG confronts the myth of absolute tolerance within modern society. Through the portrait of STAN, the artist explores the psychological toll of navigating public spaces while being subject to constant, unsolicited judgment. SPANNENBURG uses the dense, almost impenetrable texture of the evergreen shrubs to symbolise the wall of "acidic glares" and verbal aggression STAN encounters daily. The artist’s intent is to visualise the dissonance between STAN'S internal self-perception as a social, grounded individual and the distorted version of him projected by a judgmental public. It is a study on the exhausting necessity of remaining "firmly on the ground" when the environment feels inherently hostile.
Confronting the illusion of tolerance through the lens
Visual Analysis
