Finding sanctuary within the shadows of the self

In the ESTRANGED series, ARJAN SPANNENBURG explores the intricate shift from hiding to genuine exposure. This particular piece, featuring JIP, acts as a visual representation of the protective layers we inhabit before we're prepared to face the world's attention. For SPANNENBURG, the creative process is a reaction to the societal expectations that frequently compel queer individuals into a state of constant self-censorship. By positioning JIP within the rich, textured embrace of evergreen branches, the artist underscores a shared human challenge: the balance between the wish to be noticed and the urge to remain concealed.
